The 81st winner of the St Leger, held on Wednesday 17th September 1856 over 1 mile 6 furlongs and 132 yards of Town Moor, was Warlock, a bay roan colt by Irish Birdcatcher out of Elphine, owned by Mr Anthony Nichol. A field of 9 runners contested the race, although there were 133 subscriptions of 25 sovereigns each, which was worth 3325 sovereigns. The value to the winner was £3,200. It was thought this would be a foregone conclusion with Derby winner Ellington made the odds-on favourite. However, in the end he dropped away tamely to beat only one home, leaving Warlock to win by an easy 2 lengths in 3 minutes 25 seconds. The winner was an accomplished horse, winning the Great Ebor Stakes at York in 1856 and the Great Yorkshire Plate at Doncaster in 1857 as well as the Queen's Plate. | Over Round 104% |
